Leadership Coaching for Educators
Joy, safety and curiosity are essential elements for successful schools. School community members need to feel emotionally and physically safe and to find joy in learning and socializing. Valuing and nurturing curiosity is a linchpin in creating an environment in which students, teachers, and parents feel safe and experience joy. Through curiosity, we can empathize with the experiences and perspectives of others. Through curiosity, we can ask questions and seek answers about science, social studies, mathematics, literature, and the arts. Through curiosity, we can challenge ourselves to critically assess our work and accomplishments and work towards achieving new goals with a lens of wonder and appreciation.
Joy, safety, and curiosity are also essential elements in working for greater equity and justice in our school systems. All children need to feel safe, seen, and happy in order to learn effectively.
As educators, curiosity is one of our chief tools in designing systems and learning opportunities that center the children in our care. A stance of curiosity allows us to develop empathy for the experiences of our students, to learn about new topics that interest them so we can create engaging lessons and units, and to deepen our own knowledge about the world and how people learn.
We know that safety is a basic need in order for the brain to learn. Students, and teachers, need to be physically and emotionally safe at school.
That requires clear communication about policies, involving diverse voices in decision making, and honoring the humanity in each person.
Gholdy Muhammad teaches us that “joy is the ultimate goal of teaching and learning, not test prep or graduation.” By fostering a joyous environment, one that centers beauty, wonder, truth, wellness, personal fulfillment, and solution finding, all members of a school community will be able to fulfill their potential and we will be able to travel towards greater justice together.
